Vaishnavism is the Hindu religion that places great emphasis on devotion to the god Vishnu. The religion has a long history and has been the subject of many different sects and schools. The major Vaishnava groups include the Shrivaishnavas of the South and the Vishishtadvaitins of western India. Most of the core beliefs of the four main groups are the same, but some are different.
Vaishnavism has its roots in the ancient Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. Both stories contain references to Lord Rama's avatara and expound the doctrine of self-surrender. Also, the character of Sita shows how great the goddess Laxmi is in both stories. The early Vaishnava teachers were from the Tamil Nadu region and lived in the 2nd to 8th centuries. They taught that Vishnu Narayana was the supreme god and that bhakti (devotion to God) is the path to liberation. They also accepted the concept of avatars of Vishnu and practiced ritualistic worship. They believed that the deity descended into the idol during worship. During his lifetime, Shankara traveled extensively within India and founded ten monasteries to propagate Advaita Vedanta. He was a great seer and unified the basic tenets of Hinduism. There are many biographies that talk about Adi Shankara's life and teachings. Some of these are written in languages other than Sanskrit. Vaishnavism is the largest Hindu religion, with more than eight hundred million followers in India. Its origins are in the Vedas, which are the sacred texts of Hinduism. It has evolved through the centuries to become the most popular religion in the world. It has also influenced many other world religions, including Islam and Christianity. But its history is not complete. Hindu philosopher Adi Shankara started Vaishnavism. He was in favor of a system called Panchadevata, which puts a lot of emphasis on yoga and meditation. Vaishnavism is divided into two main historical denominations. The Bhagavats worship Vasudeva and follow Brahmanic Vaishnavism, while the Pacaratrins follow Tantric Vaishnavism. Among the two main branches, the Bhagavats worship Vasudeva-Krsna, while the Pacaratrins revere Narayana as their founder. Before the Common Era, Vishnu merged with the deity Narayana. This union demonstrated the Ascetics' influence on religion.Besides, the Bhagavadgita identifies Krishna with Vishnu in various forms. The Pancharatras worshipped Vasudeva and other gods. According to the Sri Vaishnava religion, Brahman is infinite in physical, metaphysical, and qualitative terms. It is the source of all consciousness. It is beautiful, blissful, and supremely merciful. It is the lover of the universe. This philosophy is often referred to as jivanmukti. Vaishnavas believe in a universal God who manifests in various forms to serve humankind. The incarnations of Vishnu are called avatars. Each of these divine figures is associated with a unique mythology. Each avatar is the object of devotion. The four major avatars in Vaishnavism are Vishnu, Krishna, Madhvacharya, and Vaishnava. Vaishnavism traces its roots to ancient India. Its founder, a Brahman, brought Sanskrit-speaking civilization to South India. He drank the ocean and commanded the Vindhya mountain range to stop growing. Since then, it has been a sacred site for pilgrims. Vaishnavas believe that Vishnu is supreme. They worship him by chanting a specific mantra. The chanting of this mantra is known as japa. Vaishnavas also go to important pilgrimages such as Guruvayur Temple and Srirangam. Vaishnavas follow the Bhagavad Gita, a text of the classical Upanishads. The Bhagavata Purana contains the teachings of Krishna and is a popular text. The other major texts in Vaishnavism are the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
